COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Heritage Fund has announced the 2026 recipients of the Donald W. & Catherine G. Jurgemeyer Community Awards, honoring exceptional local contributions.
The awards celebrate individuals and projects that demonstrate profound commitment to the Bartholomew County community.
Courtney Fisher, a lieutenant at the Bartholomew County jail and a volunteer firefighter, received the Donald W. and Catherine G. Jurgemeyer Community Hero Award. Recognized for her integrity, professionalism, and compassion, Fisher was praised for her extensive service, which extends beyond her professional duties. Notably, she founded the "Soup for Souls" ministry, a volunteer effort providing homemade meals and winter clothing to those in need. Fisher was awarded $5,000 in recognition of her dedication.
The Jurgemeyer Community Leadership Project of the Year Award was presented to AirPark Columbus for its "Great By ’38" strategic initiative. Represented by Airport Director Brian Payne, the project outlines a visionary "aerotropolis" concept for the Columbus Municipal Airport and surrounding areas. This comprehensive plan includes goals focused on land use, economic development, education, and community spaces. The organization received a $10,000 award to support its ongoing mission.
These annual accolades were established by the estate of philanthropists Donald and Catherine Jurgemeyer, long-time Columbus residents known for their civic involvement. The awards continue the Jurgemeyers' legacy of honoring those who drive positive change within their community.
