Gov. Braun declares statewide disaster emergency

STATE OF INDIANA - Governor Mike Braun has declared a statewide disaster emergency due to the flooding, severe weather, and tornadic activity that have impacted the state since August 11.

In response, the State Emergency Operations Center elevated the activation from Daily Operations (IV) to Emergency Conditions (III). Over the last couple of days, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), in collaboration with partner state agencies, has led the state’s response efforts. 

Here are the actions taken by the State:   

  • IDHS Office of Emergency Communications has deployed mobile radio towers
  • IDHS has deployed recovery teams to Northwest Indiana and a management team to Franklin County
  • Several shelters have been opened throughout the state by the American Red Cross and other partners
  • Indiana DNR has deployed boats and swift water rescue gear to flooded areas
  • INDOT/Indiana Department of Correction are removing debris and monitoring roadways for flooding
  • Indiana National Guard has been mobilized to assist Northwest Indiana and help with evacuations
  • Power outages are being monitored with utility companies so that power is restored to affected areas
